Traumatic events, including vehicle collisions, falls, and sudden impacts, can cause spinal cord injuries. Spinal cord injuries can cause severe chronic pain, paralysis and/or death.
The spinal cord consists of a bundle of nerves which run from the base of the brain and down the back, extending to other parts of the body through other networks of nerves. When a spinal cord injury occurs, one or several of a number of injuries can be taking place. Some common spinal cord injuries include compression fractures, quadriplegia (loss of sensation and movement of all four limbs), paralysis (loss of sensation and movement of lower half of the body), pinched nerves (impingement on the spinal cord) and herniated discs (a disc rupture within the spinal cord).
Compression fractures, quadriplegia and paralysis are serious injuries which require intensive medical care and life care plans. Pinched nerves and herniated discs are can also be serious injures generally recognized by a sharp, shooting pain in the arms, lower back, buttocks and/or legs, depending upon the area of the injury.
Depending upon the type of spinal injury persons with these injuries may have shorter lifespans, may have enormous medical needs and may suffer enormous wage losses. Other health problems include bladder and bowel complications, inability to regulate blood pressure, reduced control of body temperature, chronic pain and increased susceptibility to respiratory disease.
Spinal injuries can be diagnosed by MRI imaging studies which can show multilevel “slices” of each part of the spine and nerves. Nerve damage can also be confirmed by EMG electrical conduction studies.
