Death Wobble
Philadelphia Death Wobble Claims
Motorcycle riders have been know to be injured by what is referred to as a "death wobble", causing catastrophic injuries to motorcycle occupants.

A news story discussing death wobble injuries can be found here

These claims are centered upon motorcycle design, manufacturing and maintenance. To understand a "death wobble", a basic understanding of motorcycle design is necessary. The motorcycle engine and motorcycle transmission are bolted together. The motorcycle engine is bolted to the frame (either through a rubber mount or hard mount). The motorcycle transmission is not mounted to the frame, but to the swingarm through bushings.  The swingarm holds the rear tire pivots at the frame and is connected to the shocks to provide up and down vertical travel. There should be no horizontal travel in the swing arm.

If the bushings are worn, bolts not properly torqued, drive train not properly aligned, one might get lateral movement in the swingarm, particularly if there are heavy lateral forces like high speed turns.

Death wobble cases are highly disputed by motorcycle manufacturers who sometimes blame the operator and/or owner in the operation or accessories added to motorcycles.

In considering "death wobble" claims, the motorcycle should be preserved without any changes whatsoever to prevent "spoilation" of evidence.

Other important questions center upon:

The make model and year of the motorcycle?

How many miles on the motorcycle?

Where was the motorcycle purchased?

Where was the motorcycle maintained?

Were there any modifications to the motorcycle?
